How to Design a Deck

Decide How You’re Going to Use the Deck

The deciding factor of how you’re going to design your deck is how you plan to use it. Will you be using the space as a kitchen, living space, dining room, or a combination of the three? How many people do you envision being on the deck at once? Plan according to how you answer these questions, as most designs will be based on how you plan to use the space. Think about how traffic will move on the deck, which will help you decide on the furniture and amenities you want to have. Remember to leave space for walking room so guests can walk around the deck without too many obstacles. Come up with a blueprint to map out where everything will go on the deck, like the grill, seating areas, or even a hot tub. 

Understand Building Codes and Permits

Before you do any construction on your property, you first need to understand the building codes you need to follow and the permits you are required to get. You will also need to contact your local zoning board about any zoning regulations you need to follow in your area. Choose Deck Size and Materials

Size

Once you’ve decided how you’re going to use your deck, you can determine the size of the deck you want. Figure out how much space you have in your backyard and where all your utility lines are located as these will affect where you can put your deck. After determining the space you have to work with, then you can decide how big you want your deck to be so it fits your needs. If you plan to use your deck for smaller gatherings, a one-tiered deck will do nicely. If you want larger gatherings at your house with different activities, invest in a two-tiered deck to give you more space. We recommend that the size and shape of the deck complement your existing home’s exterior to ensure cohesivity. Materials

After nailing down the size of your deck, choose materials that will complement your house. We recommend you pick material colors that match the siding on your house. The materials you choose must be resistant to decay, pest damage, and weather elements like sun or rain storms. We believe that shading a part of your deck makes it more versatile by allowing it to be used in all weather conditions. Gazebos and roofs are closed structures, often being screened in to protect you from the elements. These features provide complete shade from the sun and act as a shield so bugs do not get inside. They provide a space to eat outside or entertain guests even when it is raining outside.

Add Safety Features

When designing a deck, there are a few safety features you should keep in mind. We’ve found that railings and adequate lighting are good places to start.

Railings

Railings are usually only required for decks higher than 30 inches above grade, but it’s a good idea to have them installed anyway. They are good to have especially for parties, where an inebriated guest might accidentally fall off the deck if the railing isn’t there. Even if the deck isn’t high off the ground, a fall can cause major injuries. 

Lights

Good lighting improves the usability and safety of your deck. They allow people to see where they are going, minimizing the risk of falling and injuring themselves. You can use sconces or outdoor lights for this, or even use string lights to add some decoration to the deck. You could also add post cap lights to your wooden posts, they will illuminate the space while protecting the wood from wearing down and rotting.
